Today, in honor of Independence Day, I’ll tell you 3 great things about the United States of America (from the book 1,003 Great Things About America).

1. We’re very easy to find on a globe.

2. The Empire State Building when it’s bathed in red, white, and blue at night.

3. . . . all the time we save by not putting a “u” in words like labor, favor, and color.

**Bonus Great Things about the US**

4. We don’t have our own tartans, but we are careful about picking out just the right bumper sticker.

5. We brought popcorn to the movies.

6. Surely paintings on velvet couldn’t have been dreamed up anywhere else.

What do you think is great about the United States?

    1. Freedom of Religion (I can’t imagine life without it)
    2. Baseball (we invented it)
    3. Deodorant (most people in other countries don’t use it)

    1. Football – (the real kind!)

    2. That every four years (sometimes eight) there is a change of leadership and no one is killed in the process.

    3. That we have both the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech.

    4. Did I mention Football?

  3. OK, after spending 10 days in another country, I have another one to add —

    * We can flush our toilet paper down the toilet! No nasty-smelling little trash cans beside our potties.

And, Jeff, I just spent a week in a city with over 20 million people who would argue about whether your football is the real kind. 🙂

They take their futeball very seriously. They set off fireworks and firecrackers when their team scores and when their team wins. After hearing fireworks going off, the 2 year-old son of the missionaries there looked around and said, “Soccer.” We laughed and said, “You know you’re growing up in Brazil when you hear fireworks and think soccer.”
